Common Asthma Food Triggers

When I was hospitalized due to asthma, my doctor advised to do away with foods that would trigger asthma. She told me to avoid all kinds of yellow foods, like mango, banana, squash and etc. She even added that I should avoid eating citrus or oranges because the pulp can trigger asthma. She told me that if I want to get Vitamin C from those fruits, it’s better for me to take a Vitamin C tablet. I also have to refrain from eating chicken and shrimps, but thank God she did not mentioned about Lechon. So from now, I am avoiding all of these kinds of food but I just can’t refuse to eat banana.

I was also searching the internet today and I have found this list from www.bellaonline.com.  Here’s the list of food that can trigger asthma.

1. Eggs
2. Peanuts and tree nuts
3. Soy
4. Fish
5. Milk
6. Shellfish
7. Seeds
8. Wheat
9. Sulfite, a preservative

Sources:
—Dried fruits and vegetables
—Packaged potatoes
—Wine, beer, and cider
—Bottled juices, especially citrus
—Shrimp
—Pickles and pickled foods
10. FD&C Yellow 5 (tartrazine), a food coloring
Sources:
—Numerous packaged and convenience foods
—Most condiments
—Shampoo, lotions, and other personal care products
11. Sodium benzoate, a preservative
Sources:
—Jams and jellies
—Salad dressings
—Soft drinks
—Soy sauce
12. Monosodium glutamate, a flavor enhancer
Sources:
—Package soups and stocks
—Frozen dinners
—Fast food
—Some soy sauce, steak sauce, and worcestshire sauce
13. Aspartame sweetener
14. Salicylate, a compound

Sources:
—Aspirin
—Skin-care products
—Pepto-Bismol

  3. Oooops. That is a pretty long list of delicious foods that needs to be avaoided – all in the name of not getting an asthma attack. Oh well, better to be a good patient than to endure wheezing because of asthma.
