This is a Food for the Soul post on Hebrews 12, verses 1 and 2. This is going to be a series of posts but I will begin on the the first point on Laying Aside Every Weight.

Hebrews 12:1-2

“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

According to Bible Commentaries, the book of Hebrews was written to a group of Christians who were tempted to ditch their faith in Jesus due to persecution. Thus, Hebrews 12 was written as a reminder for them not to give up on their faith.

Lay Aside Every Weight

“Let us lay aside every weight (Hebrews 12:1b).

Our Christian walk can be likened into a race. No serious runner wants to load himself up with the things which will get in the way when he runs. Right? A runner always has minimum apparel because they don’t want anything to weigh them down when they run.

What are the things that weigh you down particularly in your walk with God?

Sinful Habit

And the sin that easily ensnares us.. (Hebrews 12:1c)

It might be a sinful habit that is draining your spiritual strength. It might be personal issues like bitterness, unforgiveness, insecurities and the like. All of these are heavy weights. You can’t successfully run the Christian race carrying all these at your back.

Friends

Our friends might also be dragging us down spiritually. If so, avoid these people. Put an end to these ties so that you can run the race unhindered.

Materialism

Love for the things of this world might also drag us down in our walk with God. Sometimes our hobbies are taking much of our attention away from the race that God wants us to run. One example of this is spending too much time into social media, TV, sports and less time with God.

Lay Aside! Can you identify now what is slowing you down in your spiritual walk? Lay aside anything that you know is slowing you down spiritually. Begin today by opening everything to God!

Have a Blessed Sunday!
